Air fryer vs OTG: which suits your kitchen?

A practical look at portion size, cooking styles, counter space, and cleanup.

Both appliances use heated air, but their shape and capacity suit different routines. An air fryer concentrates on a compact basket; an oven toaster griller (OTG) offers shelf space for baking, grilling, and toasting.

01

Choose by the food you make

An air fryer is convenient for smaller batches that benefit from a perforated basket and concentrated airflow. An OTG provides a flatter, oven-style cooking area that can suit baking trays, toast, and dishes that do not fit a basket.

Neither appliance is automatically better for every recipe. Check the manufacturer's cookware, temperature, and loading guidance, and adapt times to the portion rather than treating a recipe as universal.

02

Compare usable space, not capacity alone

For an air fryer, look at the basket floor and height. For an OTG, check the internal shelf dimensions and the number of shelf positions. A larger advertised capacity can still be awkward if your usual tray or dish does not fit.

Measure the installation space with the door or basket open. Allow the ventilation clearance in the manual and make sure the electrical outlet and circuit are appropriate for the appliance.

  • Air fryer: compact basket, quick access, smaller batches.
  • OTG: oven-style shelves, baking and toasting flexibility, larger footprint.
  • Both: actual results depend on loading, recipe, and temperature control.
03

Think about cleaning and ownership

Air-fryer baskets and crisper plates need cleaning after messy foods, while an OTG can require tray, rack, crumb, and interior cleaning. Follow the appliance-specific instructions and avoid damaging non-stick surfaces or heating elements.

Compare warranty service and the availability of replacement accessories. If you regularly cook several dishes at once, also consider whether the appliance replaces part of your routine or simply adds another item to the counter.

Always follow the product manual and the manufacturer’s current installation, compatibility, and safety instructions.
